The 2 Day Jungle Trek Bukit Lawang is one of the best ways to experience the tropical rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park and observe the famous Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat.
This adventure takes you deep into the jungle where you will explore the rainforest with our experienced local guides. Along the trekking route, you will have the opportunity to see wild orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, hornbills, and other tropical wildlife.
During the trek you will also learn about jungle plants, traditional medicinal herbs, and the unique ecosystem of the rainforest. One of the highlights of this tour is spending the night at a jungle campsite beside the river, surrounded by the sounds of nature. Day 1 – Jungle Trekking & Camping
The adventure kicks off at 8:30 AM when our guide picks you up directly from your hotel or guesthouse in Bukit Lawang village. Shortly after at 8:50 AM, we gather at the Bukit Lawang Orangutan Tour meeting point for a short briefing covering the trekking program and safety rules inside Gunung Leuser National Park.
By 9:00 AM, we step into the rainforest and the jungle trekking adventure begins. The trail winds through lush greenery as we search for wild Sumatran orangutans and other incredible wildlife along the way. Our guide will also share fascinating knowledge about the rainforest ecosystem, the animals that inhabit it, and the jungle plants traditionally used by local people as natural medicine. Around midday, we pause for a refreshing break to enjoy fresh tropical fruits prepared by the guide before continuing our journey deeper into the jungle.
As the afternoon unfolds, the trek leads us further into the heart of the rainforest until we reach our riverside campsite. Here you can unwind, take a dip in the river, or simply soak in the peaceful sounds of the jungle surrounding you. As evening falls, our guide will prepare a delicious traditional jungle dinner to end the day on a warm and satisfying note, before settling in for an overnight stay under the jungle canopy.
Day 2 – Jungle Walk & River Tubing
The morning begins with the sounds of the rainforest as your natural alarm clock, followed by a hearty breakfast prepared by our guide. After breakfast, we head out for a short morning trek through the jungle, giving you one more chance to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.
Late in the morning, we make our way to the river to kick off one of the most exciting parts of the entire experience — river tubing on the Bahorok River. Sitting on large rubber tubes tied together, you will float downstream while taking in the stunning rainforest scenery on both sides. It is relaxing, thrilling, and absolutely memorable all at once. The river tubing brings you back to Bukit Lawang village, typically arriving around 1:00 to 2:00 PM, conveniently close to your accommodation.
