This full-day tour takes you to Batu Katak, a charming village nestled along the Berkail River, just 40 minutes from Bukit Lawang. Still untouched by mass tourism, this hidden paradise offers a peaceful and authentic escape into nature. Batu Katak is home to some of the world’s largest and tallest flowers—the rare Rafflesia Flower and the Amorphophallus Titanum. Your local guide will accompany you on a jungle trek to seek out these extraordinary blooms, which appear for only 4-5 days after a nine-month gestation period. If no flowers are in bloom, Batu Katak remains a must-visit destination! Beyond its botanical wonders, the area offers fantastic opportunities to spot gibbons and siamangs, explore fascinating caves, and discover a breathtaking waterfall deep in the wilderness. Savor a delicious lunch while listening to the mesmerizing calls of gibbons, then cool off with a refreshing swim in the river!

ITINERARY

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your guesthouse around 8:30 am and bring you to your car. 

A 30 min ride will take you to Batu Katak, a small village alongside the Berkail river. It is located 18km from Bukit Lawang and 8km from Bohorok. Batu Katak is a new ecotourist area of where the Karo tribe protects the environment and shows to locals and foreigners how to live in harmony with nature. 

Enter the jungle of Batu Katak and start trekking with the sounds of Siamang in the morning. Discover the beauty of the unspoilt nature of Batu Katak: walk through rivers, see caves and big rocks, cross rubber plantations and deep jungle.

Follow your local guide from Batu Katak, he knows exactly where to find the flowers! You will go to different places through the jungle to spot the highest flower of the world, the Amorphophallus Titanum. Stand next to it and realize how huge it is! You will also discover the biggest flower of the world, the Rafflesia Flower and you will remember its smell forever…  Don’t hesitate to ask questions to your guide, he will explain everything about the blooming process of these extremly rare flowers! If there are no blooming flowers, we still recommend that you visit Batu Katak. You will do a day trek and you will explore caves and enjoy chilling time at a beautiful waterfall in the jungle and swim there.

At noon, you will stop in the jungle or at the river bank (according to the location of the flowers) for lunch! Enjoy a delicious nasi goreng and some tropical fruits. Afterwards, you will keep trekking through the rainforest to see more flowers or to spot wildlife. In Batu Katak you will have huge chance to spot White-Handed Gibbons, Siamangs and maybe even wild Orangutans. If you don’t see White-Handed Gibbons or Siamangs you will for sure hear their stunning songs!

Before leaving, take a refreshing swim in the nice Berkail River or a relaxing sunbath at the river bank! Your car will pick you up and bring you back to Bukit Lawang. You will be back to your guesthouse around 4:00 or 5:00pm.
